A fun read - I love that you've written a story that shows Marlene Dietrich as an anti-fascist, since she was so involved with the allied war effort.

That said, it seems really short for a novella as opposed to a short story and it would've been nice to see a little more character development.

Also, the line "This stain must be beseitigen" from the scene with Hitler isn't quite right. If the sentence were in German, it'd be "beseitigt."

Anonymous, Glad you enjoyed the piece.

Though I read German in university, admittedly I'm a bit rustily. Perhaps I might have used 'This stain WILL be beseitigen

I went over what you've written and yes as to novella. I did mark it later in the review section as an 'extended' short story. The notion of novellas, and particularly novelettes, are the invention of English Lit profs in MFA programs; the bane of my existence

And as to character development, I take your point, though my interest was in creating a developed strong female character. Given the constraints of the short story, I do think, Allthea Bix fits the bill. Alex Rada, of course is a convention -- the aloof detective never displaying outward emotion but, as with all neurotics, his emotion is displayed through behavior. The other Bix family members have been taken from real life characters of that time in NewYork, with a change to their names.

You apparently thoroughly read the piece and were quite thoughtful in your critique; thanks you.

I was mildly surprised you didn't comment on the ending, which seems to be a tad controversial to those who would like to see more of Rada. Fiction, though, is like the subconscious -- there's no time and place there (think of A Hunger Artist). So Rada will indeed reappear in the novel I've now begun.

I do appreciate your thoughts, and perhaps I do know who you are. if you'd like something of mine that is a bit more literary, I'd suggest The Principal of Rivington Street, a short story with a Jewish flavor set in the New York of the 20's also available on Amazon http://amzn.to/shRTwi
